5-Part Film Installation

Curtain By Sue Murad with Vera Koshkina

How do we see when we travel? What follows us home?

The seeds for this work began when my friend’s dissertation research on Soviet experimental film prompted her to return to Moscow and St. Petersburg in 2015. I joined her with research of my own, looking to explore my camera through picturing a new place. In my recordings, I experiment with obstructing vision, observing private and public spaces through a peephole, through a slit, through a window. I bend, cut, and alter during post production, reshaping footage to form new landscapes and configurations, and lastly, experiment with projection itself. The installation that ultimately emerges reveals that the site of my cultural exploration was not solely a place, but also a person.

Site-Specific Video Installation:

Panorama
Film montage of interior and exterior footage shot through cut candy wrappers and other portals, projected onto the glossy, enamel surface of a desk chair.

Wheel
The train-view landscape between Moscow and St. Petersburg, rolling at you vertically, and projected on the back of an upholstered seat.

Corner
One at a time, pedestrians get caught in a freeze frame. Each person accounted for, and doubled on mirrored monitors.

Monument
Place as print & pattern. Large scale wall projection fitting the height of the room.

Curtain
Sheer Lace Curtains create privacy while allowing in just enough light to keep a room cheerful. Projected on the wall and matching the scale of neighboring artwork.

The Space, Boston, MA
The Space is a performance venue filled with living room furniture, rugs, wall art, and a design studio.
