UV Protection 2007
UV Protection (2004-2007) is a four person collaborative including Deborah Bernard, Karen Hickey, Joanna Muehleisen, and Sue Murad. The process begins with original music created around themes of technology, consumerism, and the city. Aware of the joy, humor, and danger in all three, we combine the meditative and the martial into a benevolent army.

In the early years of the band, I had a movement partner, Sasha Hodges. We would experiment with choreography, moving in and out of tandem, and would isolate a gesture for each song, such as a standing sway or a seated crossing of the legs and kicking of the foot. When Sasha left the band, my desire to continue to work with a partner led me to define this concept in new ways. My partners now included: directly responding to the video projection we created, working with common objects as props (such as plastic bags, oscillating fans, and lamps,) interacting with my costume, and working on movement with my other bandmates. My bandmate, Joanna, and I often worked collaboratively on many of these elements.
